Renovations going in theatres and cultural centres: Mayor Hrachya Sargsyan watches process of implementation
Reconstruction is going on in “Mher Mkrtchyan” Artistic Theatre which annually hosts more than 19000 spectators. The theatre was renovated two decades ago and various problems had piled there. Director of the theatre Edgar Badalyan claimed that technical facilities of the cultural centre were rather old and the equipment was out of date.
Yerevan Mayor Hrachya Sargsyan visited the spot to watch the process of renovation which includes installation of a new air conditioning system, updated property and new stage lighting and audio equipment. According to the Mayor, the city authorities have a lot of work to do to provide appropriate conditions in municipal cultural centres – theatres, art and music schools. The building where the theatre is located was built in 1911 and is involved in the list of local cultural memorials. Thus, special attention is paid to the restoration of the façade of the building.

Young Spectators’ Theatre is going to be renovated and modernized after 20-year neglect. The first children’s theatre in the republic, it was opened in 1929. Keeping its best traditions the theatre annually has 40000 spectators. However, the equipment is out of date and in parallel with the renovation the theatre will be modernized and provided with appropriate stage lighting, audio system and new furniture. Improved facilities will boost cultural life and make Armenian drama art more recognizable.

The City Centre for Children and Youth Creativity located at 3, Moskovyan street was built in 1922 and used to be named Pioneers’ Chamber. Up today this centre provides extracurricular education and aesthetic upbringing for thousands of juveniles.
This year the centre marks its 100th jubilee, so the renovation will be a desired present for nearly 1500 young pupils.

The music school after Sayat-Nova which hosts 450 pupils requires individual approach in renovation. The building has unique architectural value. To renovate this music school the city authorities allotted 25 million drams from the community budget. The project involves renovation of lavatories, classrooms, old windows are replaced with new ones, the walls are redecorated. The oval assembly hall of the school will be overhauled as well.
Hrachya Sargsyan stated that all efforts are to be taken to improve the quality of education: not only facilities should be improved but the content must change as well.
