“Sasuntsi Davit is a symbol of our people's heroic spirit and dignity” — Tigran Avinyan
At the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after Alexander Spendiaryan, the Sasuntsi Davit (David of Sassoun) ballet-oratorio once again played to a full house. Created at the initiative and special request of Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan, this cultural project has become widely beloved and highly required by audiences. The last performance was highlighted by a formal awards ceremony.
In recognition of their role in creating the “Sasuntsi Davit” ballet-oratorio, as well as their outstanding performance and contribution to Yerevan’s cultural life, the creative team was awarded "Erebuni-Yerevan 2800" anniversary medals, certificates of honor, and letters of appreciation.
"In the spiritual and cultural life of the Armenian people, there are values that are far more than just historical relics or traces of the past; they are landmarks that define the present and guide the future—heroic narratives that inspire our people, becoming an integral part of our soul. Perhaps the most powerful of these is the “Sasuntsi Davit” epic—a profound expression of our past and an embodiment of justice, faith, and freedom. For centuries, it has been passed down as a cornerstone of our national identity, and today it remains a wellspring of inspiration for our spiritual and creative life.
It is truly commendable to see contemporary artists reinterpreting our cultural heritage in new forms, demonstrating that it is not only a memory of the past but also a living voice and a message for the future. It is particularly noteworthy that Yerevan plays a leading role in initiatives that preserve and share our legacy with the public; the most significant among them is this project, the Sasuntsi Davit ballet-oratorio. This work of art is one of the most vivid expressions of our historical consciousness and the heroic life of our people, distinguished by its unique content and scope. Sasuntsi Davit has united thousands, bridging our national narrative with a contemporary artistic vision.
The Yerevan Municipality prioritizes programs of cultural, educational, and spiritual significance. It was a great honor for us to bring to life an initiative that not only preserves our national identity but also fosters a renewed confidence in our strengths, inspiring generations to strive for excellence and creativity. Sasuntsi Davit is more than a heroic tale; it is a testament to the Armenian people’s belief in their own potential. With this project, we reaffirm that our culture and creative spirit can produce extraordinary works of art, where the national and universal converge, reflecting our shared values of art and harmony.
Our epic, passed down by word of mouth through centuries, gave strength and solace to our ancestors. Today, through this project, we return it to the people in a new form—as a bridge between the past and the future that, I am confident, thousands will seek to experience and enjoy. For months, this project has educated and inspired hundreds of children and their families, filling the hearts of thousands with anticipation for this cultural milestone. Now, it has become a reality, and I am certain it will have a lasting impact for many years, as evidenced by its inclusion in the permanent program of the Opera Theatre.
Dear attendees, I would like to extend my gratitude to all participants of this project: the Yerevan Municipality’s Department of Culture and Tourism, the creative team, the educators, the children, and their parents for bringing this initiative to life. May this performance inspire our youth and remind us all that Sasuntsi Davit is a symbol of struggle, dignity, and creative power that lives in each of us.
Thank you, and congratulations once again to everyone involved in this exceptional cultural event. The “Sasuntsi Davit” ballet-oratorio, brought to life by the Yerevan Municipality and already beloved, presents our history through a modern lens. I extend my sincere appreciation to all who made this initiative possible," noted Mayor Tigran Avinyan in his speech.
