Most of Nubarashen landfill is covered with soil
Nubarashen landfill is the largest dump in Armenia which was created in the 1950s and has always remained uncovered. The poisonous gases emerged from rubbish accumulation are emitted into the atmosphere, methane gas is the main cause of fires. Today, 70 % of the landfill area has been covered with 2-metre layer of soil for the first time.
The employees of “Erebuni” company say that they wouldn’t be able to deal with the problem by themselves. The Municipality of Yerevan provided machinery to bring soil from nearest hills.
“Total area of the landfill is about 32 hectares. In 2019, 50% of the work was done, this year the covered area is 70%. The Municipality shows significant support in the form of relevant machinery”, said the representative of “Erebuni” LLC Vahram Karapetyan.
The persons in charge of the “New landfill” municipal company stated that the soil cover of the landfill is a temporary means till a new landfill is built. A competition process has been initiated related to the construction of a new landfill corresponding with the European standards. Until that, the city authorities will go on the activities undertaken three years ago.
In 2019, the road leading to the landfill was asphalted and illuminated. The whole area was fenced. Nubarashen landfill is one of the main ecological problems of the city and the city authorities set a task to find the final solution to it.
