The results of the study of the feasibility of the construction of the new line of the Yerevan Metro have been presented

The results of the study of the feasibility of the construction of the new three-kilometer metro line leading to Ajapnyak district made by British consulting company “URS” at the expense of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EVRD) within the frames of the cooperation of the Yerevan Municipality with the EBRD, were presented in the City Hall.

The deputy Mayor of Yerevan Vahe Nikoyan, the Deputy Minister of the RA Urban Development Ruzanna Alaverdyan, as well as the representatives of the RA Ministry of Finance, Yerevan Metro, “Yerevanproject” Asian Development Bank, Reconstruction and Development Bank, Reconstruction Credit Bank (KfW) were present at the presentation. The representative of the company carried out the study David Denis presented 4 main versions of the construction of the new metro line.The consultant noted that within the scope of the study they had made necessary research regarding the operation and the rolling stock, studies the preliminary demand, as well as economical and other assessments. Referring to the possible version of previously drafted route David Denis noted that in that case extra digging activities are to be carried out which would cause additional costs, whereas they had chosen less expensive variants. While exchanging thoughts and opinions after the presentation of the results of the study Deputy Mayor Vahe Nikoyan pointed out the growing transportation flows of the capital and its overload, attaching particular importance to the development of the Yerevan Metro. He also noted that the program is very expected for the dwellers of Yerevan and in case of its implementation significant changes will be brought in the issue of traffic relief and from the point of view of more effective management of passenger transportation. “The development of the Metro has always been considered in the context of general development of Yerevan and is included in the General Plan of the capital for2005-2020 as the process of vital significance. Expansion of metro lines is justified by several circumstances, particularly it will make it possible to relieve the traffic of the administrative district, thus due to reducing of the number of overground vehicles the passability of the roads will increase. The problem is actual from the ecological point of view as well”, said Vahe Nikoyan. The representative of “URS” consulting company David Denis in his turn expressed hope that the study would help in the program realization. Expressing gratitude for thorough analysis Vahe Nikoyan outlined that the proposals of the feasibility study will be used in the future during the discussions of the possibilities of perspective development of Yerevan.
