The Underground development program to be put into practical stage: Municipality proposal attracts investors
The Underground is the most comfortable, eco-friendly, fastest and safest transport. However, because of its poor development Yerevan Metro is not the most attractive transport means.
The 10th final station “Charbakh” was opened in 1996. The operation of one more station in Ajapnyak has been discussed for many years. This project was designed in the Soviet years and remained on paper for decades. A complex program was initiated today by the city authorities to realize that project.
Yerevan Chief Architect Arthur Meschyan noted that this program must be a business project and with the implementation of this business project it must become possible to construct the bridge and a new station.
The aim of all municipal projects is to create new values and new infrastructures in the city without increasing the state debts or adding to the budget.
The business project considered by the Municipality includes two components: construction of a trade centre near the station and refreshment of the hosing fund in this area. The trade entre located near the metro station will have high attendance.
“The living quarter near the metro station is rather old. It is the area adjacent to Halabyan street. There are buildings with high emergency rate and each of these buildings is considered as a separate restoration business project. By replacing low-floor buildings with multi-floor ones we can have a new housing fund without adding burden to the budget”, said Deputy Mayor Hayk Sargsyan.
These examples of community-private sector cooperation projects arise interest of investments. Businessman Arsen Iskandaryan familiarized himself with the program of metro construction.
“Currently we are considering the project of the future metro station construction without state investments. I am one of the first alumni of Polytechnic Institute and I took part in the underground constructions. Returning 40 years later I want to carry on this work”, said Arsen Iskandaryan.
Hayk Sargsyan informed that now they are discussing the volumes of the investment, the issues of quality, effectiveness and terms.
The project is very serious and of high importance for townspeople. “We must be maximally careful and strict. We have the approach, the processed project, so we are starting the work”, said Arthur Meschyan.
The project of construction the metro station leading from “Barekamutyun” station to “Ajapnyak” station has two concepts.
The tunnel connecting these stations will be of 525 m length. The tunnel was constructed in the Soviet years and remained unfinished. It will be modernized by the new project. The projects being awaited for such a long time will be realized to make the safe traffic of townspeople and guests of the capital more comfortable.
