A number of traffic safety program initiated in capital city
Safe traffic maintenance in the city is among the priority tasks of the city authorities. Since April 1, the process of road marking, installation of traffic lights and road signs has been assumed by the community. One of the first steps towards safe traffic is to ensure proper visibility of road signs and their placement on appropriate spots. Another important point is to exclude malfunctioning traffic lights and to increase the number of traffic lights with pedestrian call button. Negotiations are going on with the European Investment Bank to start the process of providing Yerevan with “smart” traffic lights.
According to the Sustainable Urban development investment project manager Nora Martirosyan, due to “smart” traffic lights installed in all junctions and pedestrian crossings in the city and the traffic management centre to be opened in Yerevan, it will become possible to manage the transport flows distantly and more promptly. This will result in decreasing traffic jams and thereby reduction of hazardous emissions.
Before installation of “smart” traffic lights, Yerevan Municipality in association with the Road police carried out some solutions. The number of vehicles in Yerevan is increasingly growing and new solutions are vital.
The annual program of Yerevan Municipality also involves modernization of bus stops. The process has started from Ajapnyak district and is going on stage by stage to cover all administrative districts.
