Yerevan Lake being cleaned up: Mayor Hrachya Sargsyan watched the process
The process of cleaning up the banks of Yerevan Lake within the annual program of Yerevan Municipality started a month ago. Yerevan Mayor Hrachya Sargsyan visited the spot to watch the process. The volumes of the initiative are unprecedented as the area is being cleaned up from the rubbish piled here for nearly 50 years. The area of 25000 sq m has already been cleaned and 12 000 cubic metres of rubbish have been removed – 40 trucks daily.
Approximately 80 million drams was allotted for the program.
The rubbish is accumulated here because of irresponsible activity of the neighborhood residents. Besides, there are thick reeds growing on the shore and they cause significant water loss. Thus measures are taken to dry out the reeds. The programs also provide installation of a lattice on the Hrazdan river to collect the litter the river brings. Besides, due to this program the level of water in the lake will increase which will contribute to increasing the volumes of water used for irrigation of Ararat valley.
In parallel with cleaning up the area the community initiated the program of construction of a recreation zone here. The project will cost the community 190 million drams.
The area of 2,8 hectares along the shore (2,1 ha of which makes green zones) will be well-arranged, 1100 linear meters of irrigation system as well as benches, dustbins will be installed, a sports ground will be constructed, a 500-meter-long cycling lane will be separated. Alleys will be designed and decorated with illumination operated on solar panels.
“This area is one of the best zones in Yerevan. Unfortunately, we have polluted it and now amounts are to be spent from the state and community budget to restore it. I will be happy if townspeople keep Yerevan, out homeland clean and contribute to the development of our country”, said Hrachya Sargsyan.
Yerevan water reservoir was built in 1970 on the Hrazdan river, in the place of the former Nor Koghb village. It is not only provided for storing the water for irrigation but also influences the local climate, relieves the summer head and winter cold of the city. After the program has been completed, the area of Yerevan Lake will become one of the most beloved recreation zones for townspeople and guests of the capital.
