Academic City Armenia Initiative Launched in the Suburbs of Yerevan

15.11.2025

The Academic City Armenia initiative, the largest and most ambitious educational project undertaken by the Republic of Armenia, has commenced in the suburbs of Yerevan.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan, Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister Arayik Harutyunyan, and Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan reviewed the ongoing works across the 275-hectare site.
Officials were informed about the activities planned to activate and rehabilitate the area, including measures to address unsorted and unmanaged waste, the comprehensive cleanup of the territory, and the mapping of buildings within the Academic City zone. Further discussion focused on the planned distribution of landscape infrastructure in accordance with the project’s master plan, as well as the upcoming large-scale landscaping efforts.
As part of the project, an archaeological expedition led by the Scientific Research Center of Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports has carried out excavations since October 15. As a result of the excavations, the Silikyan settlement, one of the oldest settlements in Yerevan, and perhaps in Armenia and the South Caucasus, with stone-built architecture was discovered.
The Prime Minister and the Mayor of Yerevan also inspected the ongoing excavation works.
