“This place will become a place of encounter and remembrance”: Charles Aznavour Statue Unveiled in Yerevan
From this day on, Charles Aznavour Square in Yerevan takes on a new meaning. The statue of the legendary chansonnier not only complements the architectural features of the square but also breathes new life and spirit into the city, accompanied by the sounds of “La Bohème” and endless applause.
At the initiative of the Mayor of Yerevan, a competition for the conceptual design of the statue honoring Aznavour was launched in 2024, marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the renowned artist. The design by sculptor David Minasyan was declared the winner by the competition committee’s vote.
For the first time, the community fully financed such an initiative, allocating approximately 85 million drams.
“Today, in Charles Aznavour Square, we are unveiling a statue that honors not only the memory of a great artist but also the Armenian people’s contribution to global cultural heritage. With over a thousand songs, numerous films, and concerts in more than 90 countries, he was a man whose name required no translation or extensive introduction, simply because he was Aznavour. His art, even today, needs no explanation or translation. This place will surely become a site of encounter and remembrance, both for the people of Yerevan and for the thousands of visitors from around the world—a place where one can once again meet the legendary Charles Aznavour,” said Mayor Tigran Avinyan during the statue’s official unveiling ceremony.
