930 new waste containers and 2 special vehicles: program of waste sorting and recycling in Yerevan is expanded
Paper, plastic, glass and aluminum. The program of waste sorting and recycling in Yerevan is expanding. Now the city has 930 new waste containers to be placed in 300 different locations.
The process of implementation and was discussed during the event the participants of which were Deputy Mayor Levon Hovhannisyan, Head of Cooperation Section of the EU delegation in Armenia Frank Hess, Deputy Minister of Environment Gayane Gabrielyan, representatives of the municipality and other key structures.
Yerevan Deputy Mayor Levon Hovhannisyan informed that two new high-quality vehicles were purchased to service glass waste. This project is a component of Yerevan Municipality’s waste management program. Similar actions will be continued to ensure townspeople’s welfare.
The project is implemented by Yerevan Municipality together with the European Union within the scope of the "Capital Cities Collaborating on Common Challenges in Hazardous Waste Management - Yerevan, Warsaw, Tirana" project. It was launched in 2020. Now, the number of waste containers in the city will reach 1200.
Head of Cooperation Section of the EU delegation in Armenia Frank Hess marked that the main goal of the project is the proper waste management and reduction of waste volumes. The EU allotted 1,5 million euro for this project.
The head of the project group Robert Gireyko marked that recycling capacity will increase four times due to placement of the waste containers. According to him, that is the main component of the project in which they expect active participation of townspeople as well. He urged everyone to join the project of waste sorting.
The problems, challenges and the possibilities of new initiatives in the sphere were discussed by those in charge during a special meeting.
Waste management is of high environmental significance for the city. Waste sorting is a priority if we want to see Yerevan green and clean.
