Yerevan to Host COP 17 in 2026: Mayor Tigran Avinyan Meets with UN Resident Coordinator in Armenia Françoise Jacob
Mayor of Yerevan Tigran Avinyan received the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Armenia, Françoise Jacob. During the meeting, he emphasized the importance of ongoing cooperation programs between the Yerevan Municipality and the UN Country Team, as well as various UN agencies, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Yerevan will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 17) in 2026. Mayor Avinyan noted that the Municipality of Yerevan is actively engaged in the organizational process within the scope of its authority.
"As the host city, we are deeply engaged in the organizational process. This significant event for Armenia underscores Yerevan’s role as an important stakeholder in the global climate dialogue," stated the Mayor.
The parties also discussed current challenges related to air quality improvement. Mayor Avinyan emphasized that the Yerevan Municipality has developed a four-year action plan aimed at reducing air pollution in the city. Moreover, Yerevan is studying the best practices implemented by partner cities.
Expressing her gratitude for the warm welcome and detailed overview of ongoing reforms, Françoise Jacob reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with the Yerevan Municipality. She also expressed the UN team’s readiness to support the implementation of new joint initiatives.
